Secondary cancers after testicular cancer: Patients with testicular cancers are usually treated with the combination of cisplatin, etoposide and bleomycin (PEB) chemotherapy. Long-term complications from PEB chemotherapy include secondary cancers. Both etoposide and cisplatin increase the risk for developing leukemia in patients with testicular cancer. Furthermore, this risk appears to be related to the total dose of etoposide given. Patients with testicular cancer who are treated with a combination of radiation therapy plus chemotherapy are at the greatest risk of secondary cancers.[9]

Patients cured of testicular cancer, however, need to be seen frequently because they are at a greater risk for developing additional cancers later in life, especially leukemias. This may be due to treatment procedures.

No one is sure exactly why these men face heightened risks for second cancers. But the study authors point out that "concern has been raised about the possible carcinogenic (consequences) of cisplatin, which is retained in numerous tissues long after completion of treatment." They believe their findings should "prompt clinicians to follow patients with testicular cancer for life, even those cured decades ago."

Der letzt Artikel ist besonders interessant, da er sich fast ausschliesslich mit dem Thema "Secondary Cancer after Testicular Cancer" befasst...
